Lunula, Explained

Quick definition

The pale crescent at the nail base — the visible part of the matrix where cells are born.

The lunula is front-line factory: matrix cells keratinize into the nail plate here. Damage it and the nail may grow ridged or temporarily misshapen.

Thumb lunulas are most visible; some people's are hidden entirely under the proximal fold — both normal.
