Keratin, Explained

Quick definition

The protein building block of the nail plate — layers of it, packed like plywood.

Nails are stacked keratin cells; hydration keeps the layers bonded while dehydration lets them separate into peels and splits.

This is why oiling (flexibility) beats hardeners (rigidity) for most nail problems — flexible keratin survives daily impacts intact.
